4 eye diseases that cause blindness

Your eye is a fragile organ that needs all the care you can give it. What's more, certain eye diseases, if not treated in time can lead to loss of vision.

Beware of these diseases and stop them from progressing before they cause permanent damage to your eyes:

Diabetic Neuropathy

Uncontrolled levels of sugar in the blood cause retinal blood vessels to leak, swell, grow abnormally or be blocked. When that happens, the scarcity of normal blood and oxygen flow to these muscles can lead to function of these tissues which in turn can seriously affect vision.

Eye trauma

Trauma or sudden injury includes conditions such as eye stroke, injury to the eye from an accident, or exposure to certain chemicals. Needless to say that immediate care by the doctor is imperative.

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

Macula is the part of the Retina that provides central vision and helps us to focus on objects straight ahead. In both Dry and Wet Macular Degeneration, the Macula loses its function leading to rapid vision loss. Early diagnosis and treatment is necessary.

Do not delay if you have one or more of these symptoms:

  • You are gradually losing the ability to see objects clearly.
  • Objects appear distorted in shape.
  • Straight lines appear wavy or crooked.
  • There is a loss of clear color vision.
  • There is a dark or empty area in the center of vision.

Cataracts

Another age-related disease, cataracts develop when the natural lens in your eye gets clouded through a natural process. Surgery is therefore the only option.

Again, make sure to visit the doctor if you have one or more symptoms:

  • A gradual or progressive decrease in vision.
  • Loss of vision is no longer getting corrected with glasses.
  • Blurry vision.
  • Double vision.
  • Lack of sensitivity to color vision.
  • Poor night vision.

If you experience a change in vision loss, it is of utmost importance that you see your doctor as soon as you can.
