Bonsai has its foundation in Zen Buddhism:

Zen Buddhism is a school of Mahayana Buddhism that originated in China during the rule of the Tang Dynasty. Followers of Zen Buddhism practise rigorous self discipline looking into the true nature of things only to apply these insights for the benefits of others. This school of Buddhist philosophy does not depend on doctrine alone but stresses the importance of direct interaction with a spiritual master.

To that end, the aestheticism of a miniature form of a bonsai tree symbolises the acceptance of all living things and focuses on the importance of finding balance and harmony in life.

The smallest bonsai tree will fit on your palm:

The Acer Palmatum or Acer Momiji is the smallest bonsai in the world but is yet to enter the Guinness Book of World Records. The Acer Momiji or Maple is native to Japan and grows in the Fukushima region. However, it illustrates the fact that bonsai as an art can be pushed to stunning extremes. Grown carefully in a pot with skill and care, tiny baby bonsai trees can fit into the palm of your hand.

The most expensive bonsai tree was claimed for a price of $1.3 million:

A centuries old white pine bonsai was sold at the International Bonsai Convention in Takamatsu for a whopping sum of 1.3 million dollars. It still stands majestic waiting to relinquish its title to an even more expensive tree in the world.

The largest displayed collection of bonsai trees comprises of 2649 trees:

Surprisingly, the world's largest collection displaying a total of 2649 trees was opened for public viewing at the International Bonsai conference and exhibition titled "Beyond the spirit of Bonsai" that was hosted by Avadhoota Datta Peetham under able guidance of His Holiness Sri Ganapathy Sachchidananda Swamiji at a Mysuru Ashrama in 2016.
