5 YOGA PRINCIPLES FOR HEALTHY LIVING
Yoga is a Hindu spiritual and ascetic discipline that is widely practised for the positive effects it has on health and relaxation. The word 'Yoga' is derived from the Sanskrit root 'Yuj', which means 'to join' or 'to yoke' or 'to unite'. In Yogic scripture the practice of Yoga brings about the union of individual consciousness with that of the Universal Consciousness, establishing a perfect harmony between the mind and body, and between man and nature.
As such, the practice of yoga involves the following and practice of 5 principles that can bring about the well-being and healing of the body and mind. They are as follows:
Yoga focuses on practicing postures that focus on the physical body. The asanas are based on the principles of alignment and stability and are meant to bring greater flexibility, strength, and mobility in our bodies for the greater purpose of improving heart-health, relieving stress, and stimulating healing. Not only are asanas considered to be very good exercise, but they are a way to feel deeply connected and more aware of your body.
Another principle of Yoga is pranayama or breath work, which is based on the foundation of healthy breathing. Pranayama involves the practice of specific
breathing exercises that help manage heart rate, calm down a stressed mind, and aid the detoxification of the body.
Further, these breathing techniques energize and revitalize both the body and the mind. The intention of Pranayama is to raise the prana, or subtle vital life force in the human body by opening up the blocked bodily channels so that prana, the life force, can flow naturally throughout the body. When combined with Asana, Pranayama helps the body to release tensions or other internal obstacles so one is better equipped to experience the richness that life has to offer.
After work comes rest. The importance of rest is often overlooked. However, in yoga, deep relaxation, practiced in the form of Savasana, is very important. Deep relaxation rejuvenates the mind, body, and spirit. Savasana reminds us that we must make time to relax after completing all work. This state of detachment is imperative for the long term health of our mind.
A pure, clean, and healthy vegetarian diet provides the enrichment of a natural diet that is rich in vitamins and minerals, as opposed to processed foods that are not. A vegetarian diet is deemed pure, easily digestible and full of all the nutrients that are required for healthy living.
