SIX FOODS TO AVOID IF YOU HAVE A SORE THROAT

A sore throat is one that has become inflamed or irritated. A sore throat makes speaking and eating difficult and can be caused by a variety of conditions such as

virus and bacteria attacks, hayfever or a respiratory infection.

A sore throat will trouble you as long as the infection lasts but remedies like drinking water and tea, gargling with salt water, and taking cough lozenges can bring temporary relief. However, certain foods will also aggravate a sore throat.

Here is a list of foods to avoid when you have a sore throat:

ACIDIC FOODS

Tomatoes, oranges, grapefruit, limes and lemons have high acidic compositions and can worsen the condition of your sore throat. These foods often cause acid reflux, which can also aggravate your condition.

SPICY FOODS

Dishes that have hot sauce, chilli powder, nutmeg, pepper or curry powder in them can worsen the inflammation in your throat. Spices trigger the salivary glands, which results in the creation of high amounts of mucus in the throat. A buildup of mucus will urge you to clear your throat more often causing further pain and discomfort.

COARSE FOODS

FOODS with a coarse texture such as uncooked vegetables, granola and dry toast are not recommended if you are suffering from a sore throat because their sharp edges and coarseness can make it difficult for you to swallow such foods.

YOGURT

Though yogurt is good for gut health, it thickens the mucus you produce and can cause more coughing and further throat discomfort.

SUGARY DRINKS

Fizzy drinks can aggravate the inflammation and are best replaced with water which will soothe your throat.

COFFEE

The caffeine in coffee dehydrates you and can make the pain of a sore throat even worse.
